You’ll need to set up an account with Acronis to use its, but you can give Cyber Protect Home Office a spin without signing up for its paid-for service or even providing payment details, by using the free trial to back up to a local drive or network disk. The latter makes it good option for anyone with a NAS that doesn’t support Apple’s Time Machine. It supports backing up your data to a local disk, Acronis’ own cloud-based service, or a network-attached storage device. Our reviews of tools here that create bootable clones should be read in that context.Īcronis is a name well known in the Windows world, but less so to Mac users.Ĭyber Protect Home Office is the new name for Acronis True Image and is its personal backup solution. There is no single solution to the problem, currently. As one developer told us, “it’s a bit hit and miss”. The net result is that, depending on which version of macOS you’re running and whether you have an Intel or Apple silicon Mac, bootable clones don’t always work. That means that the old way of creating bootable clones no longer works and developers have had to find ways to work with and around Apple’s new way of doing things. Copies of the Signed System Volume are not bootable without a cryptographic seal applied by Apple. One example of this is the introduction of the Signed System Volume in Big Sur. One of the consequences of those changes is that is harder for third-party applications that need deep access to the system to work. However, over the last few versions of macOS Apple has been making changes to make it more secure. Some apps are focused on creating clones of your hard drive and offer incremental backup as an extra feature. Apple’s own Time Machine, which is included with macOS, is an example of this kind of solution. I wonder if Apple will do the same for the professional silicon Macs when they arrive. Many options are focused solely on making backing up your Mac regularly as easy as as possible. That is good. Long ago I used to work in defence electronics, and even then electronics built to defence standards would fail, I used to repair failures when returned. Since the M1 Mac's have been released I have only seen 2 for repair, both logic board issues. I can only recollect seeing 1 or 2 2016 13" models with failed integrated storage. Some 13" models had a new type of SSD though. Most MBP's since 2016 have integrated storage. Removable SSD's in the older MacBook Airs have also had issues, but now technology has moved on. They can take an extended time to display the image of the usual flashing folder. I've seen a fair few of the 2015 models (now a vintage product) with failed storage. First was the 2015 12" Retina MacBook, followed by the 20 models. There has been a move since 2015 to integrate Apple computers storage into the logic board. However, this link describe how things may not be as bad as they seem. I was thinking about easily replaceable - it Is soldered to the logic board so apparently can be done but not by ordinary geeks it seems. Just done a bit of reading and realise I was wrong about the storage being replaceable on M1 Macs. Two backups using differing technologies seems more fault tolerant? Also CCC backups are more accessible on other systems (Linux, Windows) than TM "bundles". I suppose I lean toward the second option. I'm a firm believer in having 2 backups so this leads me to a question - Which to use?ġ x TM backup (on site) + 1 x TM backup (off-site)ġ x TM backup (on site) + 1 x CCC (off-site) This article from CCC gives more details.Īlthough slightly more complex, I'm quite happy to recover a system (if needed) by installing a fresh copy of macOS from a bootable installer disk - created as per ) and then restore my data and settings (if also needed) from my TM backup, or a non-bootable CCC clone using the migration assistant I'm considering updating to Big Sur, but notice that Bootable backups are no longer recommended with Big Sur, and in particular with M1 Macs, and CCC 6 no longer makes bootable backups by default. A Time Machine (TM) backup, and a bootable Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) backup. I've always tended to have 2 backups of my Mac stuff.

"It's probably better for me to invest my time in shows that have better working conditions, that are helping keep people employed," she said. But she also wants to support full-length shows, and the writers behind them. On one hand, she says, there are so many shows to watch, and only so much time. The strike and its disputes raise ethical questions for Fortmueller as a viewer. "I'm doing absolutely all of the work that I would do in a full writers room, and I'm paid a fraction of my normal quote," one writer recently told Indie Wire. But writers say the practice compresses their contributions and cuts their pay. Production companies say the model helps them vet a show more fully before committing to a full series. That's led to claims that writers are being treated as gig workers: Rather than joining a show for what could be a successful and lucrative run, writers in a mini room commonly earn union-guaranteed minimum rates for short assignments. It's a particularly common tactic, she said, for studios looking to create scripts for a six- or eight-episode season. Instead of paying writers more over a longer time, she added, streaming companies are "asking them to do a lot more heavy lifting in a much shorter amount of time." "Effectively they're creating shows, albeit shortened-season shows, for a fraction of the price," Fortmueller said. That means breaking a season down and structuring it - but in this arrangement, writers are paid the union minimum rather than their normal fees, and they're not kept on payroll for long period of time. "Mini rooms are essentially streamers hiring writers to come in and basically 'break' stories," Fortmueller said. Where some rooms traditionally employed around seven writers (or more than twice that, for some series), mini rooms get by with a handful of them, on a short-term basis. The growth of streaming shows is linked to a controversial topic: the shrinking of writers' rooms, into "mini rooms," where there are fewer writers than a traditional room would employ. "So I think they take a harder line in a lot of these regards." Why are mini rooms a big deal? "They're not heavily unionized industries," she added. Video game companies and streaming companies share key characteristics, she said, noting the tech industry's labor conditions and standards differ from those in Hollywood. "So I think that's not necessarily a wild card, but it does change some of the stakes."Īs a reference point, Fortmueller cites the lengthy strike between SAG-AFTRA and video game makers that ended in 2017. "We haven't really seen them as part of these negotiations in the past," she added. "What's new about this is who's at the table, frankly," Fortmueller said, listing companies such as Amazon, Apple and Netflix. And compared to the last big strike, which lasted from 2007 to 2008, new players are involved. It's a new version of their perennial disagreement over residual payments - the money that writers get when their material is reused. Writers and production companies are grappling with how to reconcile drastically different ideas of how the media business should handle streaming platforms. Here's a quick guide to what's different about this strike: What has changed with streaming? "I think it has the potential to be one of the big ones." "I think this has the potential to be one of the longer strikes," she said. The buildup of unresolved issues is just one reason, Fortmueller says, that the 2023 strike could last a while. It just didn't matter, because nobody was working anyway," Kate Fortmueller, an assistant professor of entertainment and media studies at the University of Georgia, told NPR. "Nobody cared if you went on strike in spring of 2020. His work led the way to the current understanding of a fundamental principle in the structure of organic compounds. Early in his career, his investigation of tartaric acid resulted in the first resolution of what is now called optical isomerism. Pasteur also made significant discoveries in chemistry, most notably on the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals and racemization. He is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization. His many experiments showed that diseases could be prevented by killing or stopping germs, thereby directly supporting the germ theory and its application in clinical medicine. Pasteur is also regarded as one of the fathers of germ theory of diseases, which was a minor medical concept at the time. For this experiment, the academy awarded him the Alhumbert Prize carrying 2,500 francs in 1862. Under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences, his experiment demonstrated that in sterilized and sealed flasks, nothing ever developed conversely, in sterilized but open flasks, microorganisms could grow. Pasteur was responsible for disproving the doctrine of spontaneous generation. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern bacteriology and has been honored as the "father of bacteriology" and the "father of microbiology" (together with Robert Koch the latter epithet also attributed to Antonie van Leeuwenhoek). Pasteur's works are credited with saving millions of lives through the developments of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His research in chemistry led to remarkable breakthroughs in the understanding of the causes and preventions of diseases, which laid down the foundations of hygiene, public health and much of modern medicine. The Brodmann classification divides the cortex into approximately 52 areas, numbered sequentially, although some regions have been subsequently subdivided and other are only present in non-human primates. These patterns are visible under the light microscope 1. The classification relies on the fact that the human cortex is composed of six cellular layers, the density and architecture of which vary from region to region. Brodmann areas are a system to divide the cerebral cortex according to cytoarchitectural organization, and are, despite controversy, still very widely used as a standardized nomenclature which is superimposed on the somewhat variable gyral and sulcal anatomy. Through archival footage and interviews with friends and family of Heather, Mike and Josh, the hour-long special presents itself as a serious documentary about the “real” story behind the (then) upcoming Blair Witch Project. It’s been over two decades since these TV specials first aired, but I think they’re still worth talking about after helping to solidify the Blair Witch franchise in popular culture.ĭirected by the same duo behind its parent production, Curse of the Blair Witch originally hit television screens in the summer of 1999. A year later, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2had its own lesser-known tie-ins with Ben Rock‘s The Burkittsville 7 and Shadow of the Blair Witch. And when it comes to Found Footage, no movie handled this blending of reality and fiction better than The Blair Witch Project, which was accompanied by an ingenious viral marketing campaign featuring websites, dossiers and even missing person posters.Īmong this supplemental material was an infamous mockumentary known as Curse of the Blair Witch, which premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel and was instrumental in convincing audiences that the film’s footage was meant to be taken seriously. In the horror genre, we have something similar with the way Found Footage movies invite audiences to play along with the scares to enhance their viewing experience. In professional wrestling, the concept of “Kayfabe” refers to an unspoken agreement between fans and performers to never acknowledge the fictional aspects of the sport.
